Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of mental health in improving workplace safety. The method used was a literature review (LR) employing the PICO approach. Articles were retrieved from Sinta, PubMed, and ScienceDirect using the keywords “mental health,” “workplace safety,” and “psychosocial safety climate.” Of the 62 articles identified, 20 were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results show that mental health plays a crucial role in workplace safety through three main dimensions: preventive, adaptive, and promotive. The preventive role focuses on managing stress and emotions to prevent unsafe work behaviors, while the adaptive role helps workers adapt to work-related pressures and demands. Meanwhile, the promotive role strengthens the safety culture through organizational support and a positive work environment. Policy and program support, such as Employee Assistance Programs and the Psychosocial Safety Climate, have been shown to contribute to reducing the risk of accidents and improving worker well-being. Mental health is not only related to workers’ psychological well-being but also affects their ability to make decisions, communicate, and comply with safety procedures. Therefore, mental health must be integrated into the OSH system as a vital component in creating a safe, healthy, productive, and sustainable work environment.
