Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that can lead to various health problems, one of which is fatigue. Fatigue can cause a decrease in energy and the ability to perform activities, as well as affect a patient’s quality of life. Progressive muscle relaxation is a nonpharmacological nursing intervention that can help reduce fatigue through physical and psychological relaxation. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation therapy in reducing fatigue among patients with type 2 DM in the Kenanga I Ward at Arifin Achmad Regional General Hospital in Riau Province. A descriptive method using the Evidence-Based Nursing Practice (EBN) approach was employed on two patients with type 2 DM who had a nursing diagnosis of fatigue (D.0057). Fatigue levels were measured using the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) before and after the intervention. Progressive muscle relaxation therapy was administered for three consecutive days, once daily for 15-20 minutes. The results showed a decrease in fatigue scores for both patients. For Mrs. M. S., the FAS score decreased from 25 to 21, a reduction of 4 points, while for Mrs. S., the FAS score decreased from 23 to 20, a reduction of 3 points. These results indicate that progressive muscle relaxation therapy can help reduce fatigue levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. This therapy can be used as a complementary nonpharmacological nursing intervention tailored to the patient’s condition and needs.
